MissionTo design a welcoming, monumental water feature, in keeping with many Planetree philosophies, as the central focus of the atrium providing patients, visitors & staff members close proximity to the relaxing and meditative qualities of flowing water immediately upon entering the facility.

                     WRMC Art Committee, May 2005

Design Challenges:   The art committee determined that the water feature’s design must:

· Create a “wow” response while remaining architecturally integrated with the contemporary design and finishes of the atrium.

· Enhanced the verticality of the space.

· Provide multiple visual and acoustical experiences when viewed from 360 degrees.

· Establish varying water movements that become a sculptural design element

· Be self contained above finished floor, easily operated and maintained.

Sentara WMC contracted DAS to:

· Unify art committee direction.

· Propose a variety of designs for consideration.

· Oversee design development.

· Coordinate fabrication, delivery and installation with architect contractor.

· Keep project within budget & on schedule.

Sculpture Description: The 20’ translucent water veil steals the eye upward taking full advantage of the atrium’s height. The translucent stainless steel screen allows light to permeate and create a quiet surface on which water gently cascades.  Providing contrast to the veil is the curved polished stainless steel water wall. This most accessible element of the water feature references the body both in its scale, and with its reflective surface allowing viewers to playfully interact with shifting images of themselves and their

Design Solution:   Accent interior verticality while providing water elements of varying heights, shapes, finishes, patterns & sounds to pique interest & provide the delight of discovery as one travels around the water sculpture.

surroundings.  The ridged outer curve of the 12’-copper column provides a slower water pattern than the inner curve’s honed finish with decorative sycamore leaves. A wet reflective flat stone disc unities the three structural elements below as waves of water wash over it in infinite patterns.
