Art Solutions: The art committee believed it was “people” who made their hospital special. Therefore, figurative art depicting family, friendship, joy and camaraderie was used in public spaces throughout the facility to represent and celebrate the importance of family, love, support and the caring nature of the physicians and staff at the Heart Hospital.
Close-up contemporary nature photographs were combined with vista views of land and waterscapes in interior spaces to keep patients in touch with nature throughout their hospital experience .
To celebrate the unique aspects of Norfolk, VA. additional photography depicted favorite local sites including the Blue Angels and Navy ships at sea.
Wayfinding issues were address through image placement. The main public elevator lobbies and adjacent family waiting areas on each floor have markedly different imagery. Art in the pre / post op corridors and corresponding 40 patient rooms depicted different locale appropriate themes including endearing animals, boats, gardens, landscapes, and waterscapes. |

Art Program Development: After commissioning the entry sculpture, an all inclusive multi media art program was developed for the 324,000 sq. ft. Heart Hospital. Selected images were to reflect the contemporary celebratory nature of the sculpture, the people of the community and the specific locale of the hospital and its surrounding areas with an emphasis on peaceful water images reminiscent of the nearby Elizabeth River. |
