Mission Statement:  “To create a multimedia healing art program that personifies SVBGH’s “High Tech/High Touch” approach to healing.  Selected art should visually illustrate and celebrate Planetree ideals, as well as support the local art community and reflect the hospital’s locale.”

Entry Sculpture Garden:  DAS collaborated with HDR (project architect) to design a garden around five commissioned sculptures personifying core Planetree concepts, at the hospital’s new entrance.  Locating the sculptures at the main entrance would allow visitors to experience SVBGH’s healing approach to healthcare upon their first contact with the hospital.  This garden was designed for enjoyment by visitors of all ages and mobility levels with its wheelchair and walker friendly paths and restful benches.  When completed, the garden will surround the sculptures, offering patients, visitors and staff a natural setting in which to enjoy art and nature.  Four of the five entry sculptures commissioned were created by local artists who combined their talent with personal understanding of the people and city of Virginia Beach to create figurative sculptures reflecting joy, the community, family, nurturing and “Loving Care.”

Entry Sculpture Garden Plan

Art Challenge:

· Create a cohesive healing art program that reflects the uniqueness of the Virginia Beach community.

· Visually depict Planetree ideals.

· Integrally incorporate local artists’ works whenever possible.

Main Lobby Art:  To give specific identity to SVBGH and to help expand the boundaries of the hospital, imagery in the main lobby was chosen for its  uniquely local theme.  Original photography and canvas art combine with a unique wall sculpture, history wall and two community art galleries to depict  favorite local sites, and landscapes, as well as the hospitals continuing presence in the community.

Upon entry, you are greeted by a wall hung mosaic sculpture, “Beneath the Sycamore Tree” which illustrates multiple Planetree ideals in a uniquely Virginia Beach waterscape setting.

The main elements of this art program consisted of: An Entry Sculpture Garden, the Main Lobby and Bistro, the Heart Center, three patient floors with family support areas and Community Art Galleries.
