Art Challenge:  To illustrate “The Spirit of Maine” though a patient focused, research based, art program that benefitted the community and surrounded visitors with exquisite views of nature, as seen throughout the state of Maine.

Art Solution:  Viewers are offered a diverse visual journey (from rocky coastline to blueberry fields), as they travel throughout Mercy Hospital. Waiting areas on different floors depict different yet familiar Maine landscapes, while artwork in the dining room illustrates landforms as mentioned in the state song.

Large scale images strategically placed to create dramatic exterior views from interior spaces.  Basement level elevator doors open on to 15’-0” photo murals of Maine’s shoreline while on another floor, a 10’ canvas depicts the casting movements of a fly fisherman.

Distinctive Art Source led committee members through a creative process resulting in the selection of 70 pieces of art by 13 local artists, including 2 employees.  Local original art equaled 31% of the 225 piece art program representing contemporary depictions of seasonal land and seascapes integral to Maine life.

To further help Mercy economically support their community, DAS partnered with local framers and printers which resulted in  43% of the art budget being spent locally.
